At the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the Jules Stein Eye Institute is a comprehensive center for research in the sciences related to vision, the care of patients with eye disease and education in the broad field of ophthalmology. The Institute, established as an Organized Research Unit within the University of California, and the Department of Ophthalmology focus on multidisciplinary research in basic and applied aspects of science, education of medical students, residents and postdoctoral fellows, and the care of patients with eye and visual system abnormalities.
Since Dedication of the Jules Stein Eye Institute in 1966, expansion has included additional facilities for vision science research and construction of the immediately adjacent Doris Stein Eye Research Center (1989).
The UCLA Department of Ophthalmology conducts patient care at the Jules Stein Eye Institute and at Veterans Administration Medical Centers and UCLA - Los Angeles County Medical Centers throughout greater Los Angeles.
Educational programs emphasize the training of medical students, ophthalmology residents, postdoctoral fellows in basic sciences, postdoctoral fellows in clinical subspecialties and international fellows who have appointments in comprehensive ophthalmology and the clinical subspecialties of ophthalmology.
