THE BARRAQUER INSTITUTE

The Barraquer Institute was founded on April 15th 1947 by Dr. Ignacio Barraquer and his wife, Mrs. Josefa Moner. The Institute is an independent and self-financed institution devoted to the research and teaching of Ophthalmology, to the exchange of ideas and scientific discoveries, to improve and divulge medical and surgical treatments, as well as to the advancement of ophthalmology in general.

From that date on, the Barraquer Institute has been offering postgraduate specialization courses in Ophthalmology. In 1972, Dr. Joaquín Barraquer officially inaugurated the Professional School of Ophthalmologic Specialization as a branch of the School of Medicine of the Universidad Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).

On November 24, 1993, the Barraquer Institute was incorporated to the Universidad Autònoma de Barcelona as a University Institute (Institut Universitari Barraquer - IUB).

The Barraquer Institute collaborates with the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre in the M.I.R. (Intern Resident Physician), Program for physicians that want to specialize in Ophthalmology, admitting four four-year residents every four years.

It offers advanced courses in: Eye Surgery, Specific Eye Problems and Master Degrees. There are also programs for observers and visiting ophthalmologists.

In November 2000, by joint initiative of the U.A.B. and the I.U.B. the “Joaquín Barraquer Ophthalmologic Research Chair” was established. Its main purpose being to give support to activities within the field of ophthalmology, specially, those related to research and advanced teaching through the participation of researchers and visiting professors, the organization of scientific meetings, publishing and all kind of activities related to the foundational objectives. At its founding, the Joint Committee appointed Dr. Rafael I. Barraquer Full Professor and Director.
