Bradley R. Straatsma graduated from Yale University School of Medicine (M.D., Cum Laude). He completed ophthalmology residency at Harkness Eye Institute of Columbia University and fellowships in Ophthalmic Pathology and Retina. 

In 1959, Dr. Straatsma commenced appointments as Associate Professor and Chief of the Division of Ophthalmology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He was appointed Professor in 1962, Director of the Jules Stein Eye Institute in 1964, and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology in 1968. He retained these positions until stepping down in 1994. Currently, Dr. Straatsma is Professor of Ophthalmology Emeritus. 

 

In 2002, Dr. Straatsma graduated from the University of West Los Angeles School of Law (J.D., Cum Laude).

Representative positions have included President of the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology; President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology; Chairman of the American Board of Ophthalmology; President of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology; President of the American Ophthalmological Society; Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Ophthalmology; and President of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis. Current positions include Member of the International Council of Ophthalmology and President of the International Council of Ophthalmology Foundation.

Awards and recognitions received by Dr. Straatsma include the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology Benjamin Boyd Humanitarian Award (1991); American Ophthalmological Society Lucien Howe Medal (1992); Singapore National Eye Centre Gold Medal (1998); International Council of Ophthalmology Jules François Gold Medal (2002); Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Jose Rizal Gold Medal (2003); Barraquer Institute (Barcelona) Gold Medal (2005) and International Council of Ophthalmology Duke-Elder International Medal (2006).

Recent among more than 50 distinguished lectures are the Golden Jubilee Lecture at the All India Ophthalmological Society (2003), the XXI Harry S. Gradle Lecture at the Pan-American Congress of Ophthalmology (2003), the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis Lecture at the Società Oftalmologica Italiana (2005) and the Duke-Elder Oration at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (2006). He is a Member of the Editorial Advisory Board for ophthalmology journals in North America, South America, Europe, Middle East, and Asia and is author of over 500 scientific publications.
