Dr. Spivey received his bachelor’s degree from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, his M.D. and Master’s of Science from the University of Iowa, and a Master’s in Medical Education from the University of Illinois. He also served in the Army, including one year as Chief of Ophthalmology of the Evacuation Hospital in Qui Nhon, South Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. He has been Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at Northwestern University Medical School, past Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology of California Pacific Medical Center, past Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at Columbia and Cornell Universities.

From 1976 through 1991, Dr. Spivey served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center, now California Pacific Medical Center. In 1986, he was also CEO of California Healthcare Systems (CHS) in the San Francisco Bay Area which comprised of California Pacific Medical Center, Mills-Peninsula and Marin General Hospitals. CHS has merged with Sutter Health.

From 1978-1992, Dr. Spivey served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the “umbrella” national ophthalmic organization providing leadership and continuing education to the ophthalmologic profession.

From 1992 to 1997 Dr. Spivey was President and Chief Executive Officer of Northwestern Healthcare (NH). The founding members included Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Children’s Memorial Medical Center, Evanston Hospital (including Glenbrook Hospital) Corporation and Highland Park Hospital. Swedish Covenant Hospital, Ingalls Health System, Northwest Community Healthcare and Silver Cross Hospital became members, increasing the geographic reach of the Network.

From 1997-2001, Dr. Spivey served as President and CEO of Columbia-Cornell Care, which combined the clinical faculties of Columbia and Cornell medical schools in an entity which contracted for their services and supported the practices of over 1,700 physicians.

He has served on many boards of international, national and regional health care organizations and ophthalmologic societies. His past positions include President of the American Board of Medical Specialties; President of the American Ophthalmological Society; President of the Council of Medical Specialty Societies; member of the Graduate Medical Education National Advisory Committee, and a member of the Board of the Voluntary Hospitals of America. He is the recipient of a number of medals and awards in ophthalmology and medicine. Dr. Spivey is the author of over 110 scientific education and management articles, and often addresses major meetings in the health care field. He has given nearly 30 named lectures. Dr. Spivey is a trustee of Coe College, Helen Keller International and a (founding) member of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company and of the Board of the U.S. China Educational Institute and serves on eight other for-profit and not-for-profit Boards.
