Dr. E. Rand Simpson graduated from the University of Toronto and completed postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Neurology in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He obtained certification and fellowship in Ophthalmology at McGill University in Montreal and proceeded to complete a fellowship in Neurophthalmology with Dr. David Cogan at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston.

Dr. Simpson returned to Toronto to join the Ocular Oncology Program at Princess Margaret Hospital/University Health Network and subsequently assumed its directorship as Chief of the Department of Ophthalmology.
In 1994, Dr. Simpson became President of the International Congress of Ophthalmology and was a member of the International Council of Ophthalmology from 1990 to 1998. He continues his association with the I.C.O. as a member of the International Council of Ophthalmology Assessment committee which provides an evaluation and education standard to Ophthalmologists worldwide.
Dr. Simpson has chaired numerous committees and advisory agencies related to education, research and professional conduct, notably the Task Force on Independent Health Facilities for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. He maintains a full teaching schedule at the University of Toronto as an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and continues his many research interests in Ocular Oncology. He has participated in several clinical trials (including the Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study) as both co and principal investigator and is a member of the board of directors of numerous national and international societies.
