Training in phacoemulsification with Charles Kelman, MD, at the Manhatan Eye, Ear Hospital, in New York and with Robert Sinskey, MD, at the Foundation for Ophthalmic Education, in Santa Monica, California, in 1976-1977. He is one of the pioneers of phacoemulsification in Brazil and he implanted the first posterior flexible intraocular lens (Shearing IOL) in South America in August, 1976.

Miguel Padilha, MD has actively and enthusiastically contributed to and witnessed strides in cataract and intraocular lens surgeries through hundreds of courses, symposia, congresses and more than 500 lectures delivered in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, United States, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Japan.
He is Founding Member and Member of the Board of Directors of the Sociedade Brasileira de Catarata e Implantes Intraoculares (1981), has organized and promoted its first four International Symposia in Rio de Janeiro, and has actively participated in the SBCII during the last 24 years since its foundation. For two terms he was President of the SBCII : 1985-1987 and 1998-2000. He chaired the 2000 SBCII International Congress in Rio de Janeiro.
Dr. Padilha is Founding Member of ALACCSA ( Associación Latinoamericana de Cirujanos de Córnea, Catarata y Segmento Anterior ) and acted as President in 1996-1998. He was Founding Member of the World Federation of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and participated in the First World Congress in July, 2000, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Miguel Padilha, MD., has written many books, scientific articles, chapters, contributions, forewords, in works published in Brazil and abroad: Mastering the techniques in Corneal Refractive; Terapêutica Farmacológica em Oftalmologia; Cristalino e Catarata: Diagnóstico e Tratamento; Phacoemulsification in Difficult and Challenging Cases; Obstetrícia; Excelência em Biometria; As Bases da Administração em Oftalmologia; Fixated posterior chamber lenses; El Arte y la Ciencia en la Cirugía de Catarata; etc. He published two text books : Facoemulsificación : del basico al avanzado and Cataract ( Best Didactic Book Award by the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology).

• Former Chairman and Professor of Ophthalmology at UniFOA, Volta Redonda, State of Rio de Janeiro.
Winner of video presentations in several congresses, he was awarded First Prize (IOL Complications) at the 2003 ASCRS in San Francisco.
Distinguished with several titles and medals for his contribution to Ophthalmology, he was also granted the Pedro Ernesto Medal, the highest honor title granted by the Municipal Assembly of the City of Rio de Janeiro.
