Brief Biographical Sketch
Born as the son of a scholarly ophthalmologist in Osaka, I started medical study in Tokyo University in 1958 and continued the study in the University of Freiburg, Germany 1960 and graduated from it in 1967. Upon returning to Japan, I received ophthalmology training at Tokyo University under Prof. Shikano Shinichi and Prof. Saiichi Mishima. I received Doctor of Medical Sciences in 1993 from Tokyo University (thesis: Synthesis of interleukin-1 and prostaglandin E2 by lens epithelial cells of human cataracts. Br. J. Ophthalmol. 76:338-341, 1992; amplitude of accommodation of primate lenses refilled with two types of inflatable endocapsular balloons. Arch Ophthalmol 111:1677-1684, 1993). I moved to Jinshikai Medical Foundation, Nishi Eye Hospital in 1972 and have been in the present position since 1980. My clinical and experimental works have focused mainly on the solution of the problems involved in cataract surgery followed by intraocular lens implantation. These include the prevention and treatment of postoperative complications and particularly those caused by residual lens epithelial cells including their pathophysiology (prevention of posterior capsule opacification by sharp-edged IOL) and the restoration of accommodation.
I have presented lectures at many international ophthalmological conferences including ICO (International Congress of Ophthalmology) in Singapore in 1990, SOE (Societas Ophthalmologica Europea) in Brussels in 1992, Congress of the ASCRS (American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery 1982-) held in USA, Congress of the ESCRS (European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons 1986-) held in many European countries and many German ophthalmological congresses including DGII (Deutschsprachige Gesellschaft für Intraokularlinesen Implantation), GOS (German Ophthalmic Surgeons), IOMSG (International Ophthalmic Microsurgical Study Group), DOG (Deutsche Ophthalmologische Gesellschaft).
I have published 92 original papers in international journals and participated in 18 books written in English as a contributor.
I am a member of several National and International Professional Societies.
