James P. McCulley, M.D., F.A.C.S., FRCOphth(UK) is Professor and Chairman of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, Texas, and holder of the David Burton, Jr. Chair in Ophthalmology. He received his undergraduate degree from Texas Christian University and his degree in medicine from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. McCulley completed his residency in ophthalmology and specialty fellowship training in cornea and external disease at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of Harvard Medical School. Dr. McCulley was a staff ophthalmologist at Bethesda Naval Hospital for two years and spent four years on the faculty in the Department of Ophthalmology at Stanford University Medical School before joining the faculty the University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas. He became Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology in 1981. He has been selected as one of the “Best Doctors in Dallas” by D Magazine and “Best Doctors in America.” His honors include TCU and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary Distinguished Alumnus Awards and the Senior Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Under the leadership of James P. McCulley, M.D., the Department of Ophthalmology at UT Southwestern Medical Center continually trains residents and fellows in cornea and external disease, anterior segment surgery, keratorefractive surgery, retina, glaucoma and pediatric subspecialties. Multiple fellows from Latin America, including the countries of Brazil, Venezuela, Columbia, and Mexico, as well as fellows from Europe and Asia, have graduated and are now practicing in their home countries. Fellowship positions are still routinely available through the fellowship match for qualified applicants from Latin America in cornea and pediatric ophthalmology. Fellowships in other disciplines are considered on an individual basis.

Dr. McCulley’s research interests include over twenty-five years of NIH-supported evaluation into the pathophysiology and therapy of chronic blepharitis and associated ‘dry eyes.’ This work not only has led to an understanding of chronic blepharitis, but to a very thorough understanding of the lipid layer of the tear film which is produced by the Meibomian glands. His work has allowed the development of a model for the structure of the lipid layer of the tear film, and has led to the identification of the biochemical abnormality accounting for the “evaporative dry eye.”

Other research interests have included extensive evaluation of acanthamoeba keratitis. He identified the association between contact lenses and their solutions and the development of acanthamoeba keratitis. He has worked extensively on the pathophysiology and therapy of this severe infectious disease. Dr. McCulley has also had a long-term interest in the tissue culture and transplantation of single layers of corneal endothelium and epithelium. He has had multiple other research interests in the past, including basic and clinical research on chemical injuries of the eye and multiple pharmaceutical trials. Dr. McCulley has published over 350 citable scientific papers, served as Chair of the NEI study Section and Chair of the FDA Ophthalmic Device Panel. He has been the primary investigator on a NEI-funded grant since 1978.

Dr. McCulley is the Medical Coordinator of efforts between the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the Order of St. John to create a junior faculty rotation at the Order of St. John’s Eye Hospital in Jerusalem. He has the lead role in the establishment of a partnership with Prevent Blindness Texas to re-establish, on an annual basis, the “Eye Ball” in Dallas, Texas, an event that funds research in the Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. McCulley has served as an Associate Examiner of the American Board of Ophthalmology and on multiple local, state and national boards, and has been an invited speaker at multiple national and international locations.
