Professor Spyros Georgaras, MD, Founder and Director of the Research and Therapeutic OPHTHALMOS Institute in Greece, is known for being an innovator and pioneer of modern surgical techniques and as a physician who has elevated the level of skill and knowledge among ophthalmologists in Greece and abroad. He has emphasized the importance of cooperation, the sharing of experiences, and the forging of professional links between ophthalmologists at home and internationally. An emphasis on the highest standards in technology has given Ophthalmos Institute under his direction the reputation for being at the forefront of ophthalmology.


Awarded a Ph.D. by the University of Athens in 1979, he went on to specialize in anterior segment diseases and therapy of the eye. Professor Georgaras was one of the first surgeons in Europe to introduce Radial Keratotomy to treat myopia and one of the pioneers of cataract operations using phacoemulsification and Intraocular lens implantation.

He is the first surgeon in Greece who operated hyperopia and high myopia with intraocular lenses, and presbyopia by extension of the sclera, radiofrequency and monovision. He has invented holographic lenses for ametropia corrections, for which he acquired a Patent certificate both in Europe and the United States. His work on his own surgical techniques has been widely published. 

In 1978 he was trained in Barcelona at the Barraquer Institute and in 1980 in New York, where he was tutored by the inventor of phacoemulsification Dr. Charles Kelman.

In 1981 he had further training on myopia and astigmatism surgery, at Prof. Fyodorov’s Eye Microsurgery Institute in Russia and was honored with the Soviet Union Eye Surgery Medal. 

In 1984 he established the scientific “Hellenic Society of Intraocular Implant and Refractive Surgery -HSIOIRS”, which now brings together 400 ophthalmic surgeons specializing in refractive surgery. He was the President of HSIOIRS until 2003, and since then he offers his services as the President of the HSIOIRS Research and International Affairs Committee.

In 1985 he founded the Research and Therapeutic Institute “Ophthalmos”, one of the leading ophthalmological centers in Greece, operating under the Presidency of Professor Georgaras who is also its Managing Director. 

In 1992 he founded the Ophthalmological Center “Hygeia-Ophthalmos” at “Hygeia” Hospital, in Athens. Apart from hospital services, “Hygeia-Ophthalmos” is a research and training Center. 

Professor Spyros Georgaras participates in many scientific ophthalmological Congresses internationally, where he presents lectures, organizes instructional courses, teaches in wet lab sessions and performs live surgery. Many of his articles have been published in Greek and foreign Ophthalmology journals. Among them, the main ones are his innovative technique “BiMBiE” (Bi-manual Bi-energy technique for cataract extraction), Laser trabeculotomy on combined cataract - glaucoma surgery, his special techniques for the correction of astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia and presbyopia, as well as his special technique on cornea transplantation.

In April 2000 Dr. Georgaras was appointed Visiting Professor at the Leipzig University and is representative at international scientific events, particularly in Germany.
Prof. Georgaras is a member of several Greek, European and International Ophthalmological Societies, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS).

He has been the Chairman of the Education Committee of the European Board of Ophthalmology (E.B.O) established in Brussels, and for 4 years he was responsible on matters of education of many European ophthalmologists. Also he was one of the 3 members of the Residency Review Committee of E.B.O, regarding the inspection and approval of European Ophthalmological Centers for Residents’ training.

In 1999 he was nominated and received the first Kelman Award, for his contribution in the widespreading of phacoemulsification. He also received a special award by HSIOIRS for his 20 years’ work on the progress and wide dissemination of modern ophthalmology internationally. 
In 2003 he received the Gold Medal of the Indian Ophthalmological Society, for his innovating surgery techniques.

In 2005 he was honored appointed by the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS), as the International Representative of the Society for the Greek territory.

Professor Spyros Georgaras is the only Greek ophthalmologist till today, among the members of the International Intraocular Implant Club (IIOIC), consisting of a very limited number of internationally well known ophthalmologists.
