Drews received his AB, MD, and residency training including an NIH research fellowship at Washington University in St Louis. He served as ophthalmologist (LCdr) at the US Naval Hospital, Great Lakes before entering private practice in St Louis and resuming professional activities with the university.
Drews has authored over 475 publications including books, chapters, and scientific papers, of which about 220 have appeared in peer-reviewed journals. He has been an editor of the English editions of Highlights of Ophthalmology Journal and many of its books; he has served on the editorial committee of Ophthalmology, and numerous ophthalmic peer review panels.
Drews has been a popular invited lecturer and visiting professor, both in the United States and abroad, lecturing, performing and teaching advanced ophthalmic micro-surgical techniques widely throughout Latin America, Europe, and parts of Asia.
Drews has been honored with 11 medals, including the Gold Medal of the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology, the Montgomery Medal of the Irish Ophthalmological Society, the Rayner Medal of the United Kingdom Cataract and Refractive Surgery Society, and the Medaglia d’Oro of the Societa Oftalmologica Italiana. He has given 9 named lectureships including the Rayner, Binkhorst, and Gradle. He has received numerous other awards for his professional and civic activities including the Distinguished Alumni Award of Washington University, and the Second Century Award of the Washington University School of Medicine (its highest award).
Drews has been a member of over 30 national and international ophthalmic societies, and has served as President of most of them, including the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology, the American Ophthalmological Society, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Intraocular Implant Club, and the International Ophthalmic Microsurgery Study Group. He has served on 30 Boards of Directors including the Board of Trustees of Washington University in St. Louis, the American Board of Ophthalmology, the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology, and Highlights of Ophthalmology. He served as president of Highlights for 10 years, and its CEO for 2. Current board memberships include the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology, Highlights of Ophthalmology International, the St. Louis Society for the Blind and Visually Handicapped, and the National Council of Washington University School of Medicine.
